Etiquette: Foot in Mouth Comments

Despite our best intentions, sometimes we wind up with our foot in out mouth.  Somehow the wrong words escaped your mouth and then judging from the look on the other person’s face,  you realize that  you eff’d up.  Now what?

Best advice… don’t make it worse by over apologizing or explaining.  A simple  “Wow, that really came out the wrong way” is usually enough to kill a bad comment. If an apology is warranted, make it very short, then quickly move on to another subject.

Finally, knowing when to quit is equally important. Try to avoid all temptation to try to explain, usually it only gives you another opportunity to put your foot back in your mouth a second time!
