Name Calling: Sugar, Honey and Dick

What’s up with guys generically calling women Sugar or Honey? I don’t generically call every man I meet “Dick.”

A friend and I were in a discussion  name calling, specifically, guys calling her “Honey, Sweetie, Sugar and Babe.”  She wanted to know how to respond to that? My first response was to tell her just call them “Dick”.  Thanks, Dick. How ya doing Dick? How you feeling, Dick? What’s that on your face, Dick.

I liked the answer but it’s not really practical. The real problem that Sugar and Honey are terms of endearment and should be reserved for those who are endeared and not tossed around like an old shoe. When those words come from a stranger they seem more offensive than endearing. Some guys can get away with that type  of name calling, but most of you can’t.

So Gentlemen, before you call someone Honey or Sugar, think about substituting it with something that will actually make you look good and not sound like a dick.

Man Tip: If you can’t call her by name, consider calling her  “Beautiful” instead of Sugar — very few woman object to being called Beautiful.

  • Thing is, if a guy calls a woman "sweetie," and she reciprocates with "honey," he'll get the (presumably) wrong idea... How about "ma'am"? (Or if that gets you yelled at, "Senator"?)
